A man who always stood by his principles and stood for what was right. A teacher, an anti-war campaigner, and a general carer for other people. Born in Pollokshaws, MacLean grew up in a very poor household as the second youngest of 7 children to parents who only spoke Gaelic. At the time, Pollokshaws was an area largely dedicated to weaving, with several established weaving factories as well as dye and print works. The wealth and power difference between the millworkers and the landowners were extreme; such was the Victorian era MacLean was born into. Through the Free Church Teacher Training College, he became a schoolteacher whilst also attending part time courses in Political Economy at the University of Glasgow. In a speech he delivered in Edinburgh at the High Court in 1918 he said: ‘I wish no harm to any human being, but I, as one man, am going to exercise my freedom of speech. No human being on the face of the earth, no government is going to take from me my right to speak, my right to protest against wrong, my right to do everything that is for the benefit of mankind’. Under the terms of the Defence of the Realm Act he was later arrested and served over a year in prison. Overwork, imprisonment, and incidental hunger strikes took their toll on MacLean. Aged 44 he collapsed during a speech and died of pneumonia. In 1973 a memorial was placed in Pollokshaws which reads: ‘In memory of John MacLean’, ‘Famous pioneer of working-class education. Scottish by origin and characterised by broken checks, our houndstooth fabric design is called ‘Margo’. Named after Margo MacDonald, a massive figure in scottish and UK politics we felt it appropriate to honour her and her legacy in our inaugural collection. Margo MacDonald (1943 - 2014) was a Scottish politician, teacher and broadcaster. As one of the biggest political personalities in Scottish history, she established herself as a forceful and respected woman who conducted her debates with respect and passion. As a break from Parliament, she became a presenter of various television and radio programmes in Scotland. In response to accusations from male journalists that she was ‘greedy’, ‘dangerous’ and ‘dedicated to destroying the United Kingdom in the way we understand it’ she responded: ‘I’m terribly dangerous. I’m terribly greedy, because I’m really sick to the back teeth of seeing unemployment figures which show over 200,000 Scots out of work. And if you can justify to me the accusation that it’s greed for me and other people in the Scottish National Party, to want to see young Scots in jobs and able to lead a decent life in Scotland then I will accept the charge of greed’. She later became a three-time-returning Independent Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Lothian from 1999 until her death. In her later life she used her position of authority to relaunch the ‘Right to Die’ bill which aimed at allowing people whose lives became intolerable through a progressive degenerative condition or terminal illness the legal right to assisted suicide. The final fabric to introduce in Vevar’s inaugural collection, ‘Dresser’, takes its name from an often historically overlooked British designer and design theorist, Christopher Dresser. Now widely known as the ‘father of industrial design’, he is one of the first people you learn about at art school and is considered the first independent designer. Dresser was born in 1834 in Glasgow to English parents. At the age of 13 he attended the Government School of Design in London where he became an award-winning student. Whilst there, Dresser specialised in botany as the school encouraged combining science with art. As a result, he found a career in botany which included publishing books, articles, becoming a fellow at multiple societies and lecturing (including at his former art school). Well known Arts and Crafts designer William Morris was born in the same year as Dresser. However, the fundamental difference between the two was that Dresser embraced and Morris rejected the mass-manufacturing of the Industrial Revolution.
